CPG Trends and what to expect in 2022
Projecting into the future has not been the easiest task these past few years, but it does appear that there is reason to hope that we are moving not beyond Covid-19, but towards safe in-person events and an economic recovery. The supply chain is still a source of uncertainty and for many the cascading impacts of the pandemic still persist. It may still be too early to know exactly how the pandemic has shift us culturally on a large scale, but we’ve seen it change trends year to year in the CPG industry. Last year, the spike in sales (up 65%) of ready-to-eat items suggested that people were over the daily cooking regime of 2020. Booze-free libations and mushroom-based bars, teas, bites, beverages, and cereals indicate consumers were making healthy substitutes without sacrificing experience and taste.
So what’s to come this year? Pop-up Up Grocer’s 2022 Food Trend Report suggests that we’ll celebrate being maskless more often with breath fresheners that boost immunity, or offer a dose of CBD, or support dental health. Other trends include:
- Caffeine alternatives: energy boosts without the shaky hands with ingredients like B12 Carob, Reishi, Ginseng, etc.;
- Carbonated beverages with flavors rooted in cultural traditions, i.e. Asian and South American flavors include yuzu, calamansi, maqui;
- Frozen foods as consumers continue to thing long term in their shopping;
- Healthy baking mixes- nutritious comfort foods and desserts;
- Contextual shopping: buyers are continuing to care about the story behind the creator and the product and are interested in using their purchasing power to support founders and brands with identities and ethics that align with their own.
Pop-Up’s survey also asked buyers about their most creative meal (dinner by 78%), whether or not they read the full ingredient list before purchasing a product (nearly 60% do), and the most important factors when considering a new product (ingredients and their health benefits and cost were the top two).
Want to attend? It’s not too late, register here and be sure to let us know what other trends you noticed.
